Glutamine & Glutamate Assay Kits

Glutamine (Gln) is one of the most abundant free amino acids and has important and unique metabolic functions. It is synthesized via condensation of glutamate and ammonia. Glutamine enters the cell through the amino acid transporter, ASCT2/SLC1A5, and is converted to glutamate in the mitochondria through a deamination reaction catalyzed by glutaminase.
Gln is still classified as a non-essential amino acid (but increasingly as an conditionally essential nutrient - particularly under catabolic stressed conditions). However, Gln is important as a precursor for the synthesis of amino acids, proteins, and many other biologically important molecules, constituting the cell’s main source of nitrogen for the synthesis of nucleotides and hexosamines. It is a substrate for gluconeogenesis, and an oxidative fuel in rapidly proliferating cells and tissues to meet their increased demand for ATP, biosynthetic precursors, and reducing agents. Gln is involved in several biological processes (such as cell growth) as well as in the regulation of e.g. acid-balance in mammalian kidneys, protein synthesis/degradation in skeletal muscle and glycogen synthesis in the liver. 
Glutamine metabolism and levels play an important role in several disorders such as Crohn’s disease, severe burns, HIV/AIDS and cancer.  

Besides glycolysis, glutaminolysis is a major energy producing pathway for cancer cells to allow enhanced proliferation and stimulate tumor growth and metastasis. Thus, normal glutamine metabolism is dysregulated in many cancer cells which also show a markedly enhanced glutamine uptake. As many tumor cells have a high dependency on glutamine for their growth and survival, some tumor types might be effectively targeted by therapeutic regimes involving glutaminase inhibition.
