Cytokines and chemokines are small proteins secreted by a variety of cell types. They are important signal messengers mediating cell communication and activating other target cells through binding to specific receptors. Cytokines play a central role in the immune system - in which the chemokines mainly function as chemoattractants. They also coordinate and regulate other biological processes such as cell growth and development or tissue repair.
