PromoKine offers a wide range of nuclear stains with wavelengths ranging from UV to near infrared. The membrane-permeable stains can be used for live cell staining and the membrane-impermeable stains for fixed or dead cells. Fluorescent dyes with aromatic or guanidine groups interact with nucleic acids by intercalating within the DNA double helix, or by binding to the minor groove. Popular dyes include; orange-fluorescent ethidium bromide (EB), red-fluorescent propidium iodide (PI), green-fluorescent acridine orange (AO) and blue-fluorescent DAPI as well as the Hoechst dyes. Hoechst dyes can pass through viable cell membranes and DAPI, PI, AO and EB can only penetrate damaged cell membranes (dead cell indicator stains).
These dyes provide excellent counterstains for fluorescence microscopy.
Some of them, (such as the green fluorescent DMAO), can also be used as bacterial stains.
